Since they've all used pretty much the same Wolfson DAC with just incremental improvements, I think it's pretty safe to say what kind of DAC it will have.

although I never i tried it I guss there is really no use in optimizing the chain when the source is ******.

i don't know your compression level but there is no need for an audiophile mod like the redwine one if you use 128k mp3s

You'd do better to spend your money on better headphones and/or a headphone amp.

No, but I compared the output of my iPod to my CD player using a lossless file and found them to be equal. Unless the mod has the ability to make the sound better than the source, I see no reason to upgrade.

That's what it's designed to do. This is the reason why I asked had you listened to an iMod (assuming that you had not). Perform a search on this board, and you'll find testimonials of people attesting to a dramatic improvement in sound quality (rivaling the quality of mid-fi CD players). And here is an in-depth review of the iMod:

I can hear very clear differences between the output of a normal iPod and a CD player (albeit a Naim, haven't checked vs budget players). With the iMod the difference is still there but less so. Your MP3s will sound better with the iMod, lossless files will also sound better than a stock iPod. If you want to stick with MP3s you might also check out installing Rockbox on your iPod - I've found the MP3 decoder to be superior to Apple's, particularly on LAME encoded files.

If you don't use an amp and good headphones, you probably won't hear the difference, so don't bother.

ok.. forget it, i just made the switch to apple lossless last night, no more mp3s. On my ipod mini now i can only fit around 10-12 CDs now =P

honestly for some songs I cant tell the diff between the mp3 vs. lossless (esp the 320k ones)

so I will be getting a 60g ipod soon. now the question is to imod or not to imod

from the testimonials and reviews it seems like a good mod to do, but again I don't know how biased those are (esp. the testimonials on the site itself)

does anyone here actually have the imod and was it a complete night and day diff vs. stock ipod playing apple lossless?

the only full review so far on head-fi has been that one huge thread about how the guy just got his imod a while back.. i've read that already, just wanted to hear more feedback from other people
