I have had my akg 701s for three years and I have recently rediscovered them after I upgraded the power cord on my burson ha-160 amplifier.I saw a close out on a nordost brahma power cord at music direct earlier this summer.I like almost everybody else have fallen under the spell of the audeze lcd-2 rev2.This has been my preferred tool for listening to music ever since I purchased them last november.
I bought the nordost as I had said earlier this summer and it has taken a laboriously long time to break that cord in but it seems to have settled in pretty much at this point.I was using my audezes exclusively and after not using my 701s for some time I was curious how they would sound with the burson with the new power cord on it.So I dusted them off and hooked them up.Wow!!!! That was my original reaction to this combo. The 701s are really towing the mark. The soundstaging ability of this headphone is really ear opening.I also have been made aware of the audeze lcd2 v2s weakness in soundstage reproduction. When I play well recorded cds the akg can resolve the sound of the recording space(studio, concert hall, etc.) very well.Live recordings sound amazing on the burson with the brahma power cord on it.The burson really sounds a lot more dynamic and resolution has markedly improved. But getting back to the sound of the akg 701 versus the audeze lcd2 v2. I was surprised at how much better the akgs were at resolving the sound of of the original sound venue than the audeze.I enjoy the sound I get out of the lcd2 but I find that sound is a lot less realistic than the 701s presentation of soundstage information.Listening to the audezes is more like listening to music on a system but listening to music on the 701s is like listening to the real thing.I actually prefer listening to music on the 701s these days at least on my present setup.
This journey to obtain the best sound never seems to end and along the way one can find the results surprising.
