I've been thoroughly enjoying this music for many months now, and I thought I'd share with y'all.

Record of the Week Club

Essentially, a producer in Winnipeg by the name of Mike Petkau got a grant to record a song every Wednesday for sixteen weeks over the summer of 2008. Each Wednesday, a different group of local musicians would come to the studio with no relation to one another (often meeting for the first time in the studio), and together they would compose, arrange, and record a song, which Mike would mix and serve on the net by Thursday morning. Most of the tunes are a bit strange and artsy, but if I know head-fi, that's fine for most of you.

You can freely stream the songs from the website, download them for not much money, or order the CD if you so choose. There's some serious musical magic happening on some of the tracks. I bought the CD, and my wife and I both listen to it a lot. It reaffirms to me that Winnipeg has a completely awesome local music scene.

Proceeds from the CD/download sales support the rebuilding of the West End Cultural Centre, one of the best live music venues I've experienced from either side of the stage.

Enjoy!

This is a very cool idea, and it doesn't suprise me that it came from Winnipeg, great music scene. It does suprise me a bit that this is the first I've really heard of it though. Acidbasement, have you seen what they're doing to the WECC with the new attachment? Its hideous plastic tiles and such, kind of kills the cool folky, community feel that it used to have. Oh well, its still going to be a great venue!

Oh, that's a shame about the building. I haven't seen it, but I'll check it out next time I'm in town. Hopefully the inside is done better! Some of my favourite concert experiences have been in there.

Its a great venue, thats for sure. I haven't seen inside, but I think a lot of the greatness that is the West End Cultural Centre comes from the great music and the way its run, which I hope doesn't change. The old atmosphere sure made it a cool experience though! I'm happy that they decided to keep the old building, it just wouldn't be the same without it.
