Hi there, has been some time since I was last on the forum. It helped me greatly and there is such a wealth of knowledge here but now it seems there are soooo many products on the market and it has become almost impossible to choose how much I need to spend and then which set of cans to get to suit my listening style.

I initially bought a set of Etymotic er4 p which were excellent but lacking low end, which was bothersome as when I'm on the go I tend to listen to more upbeat music with an underlying bass line, so when the shure e4c's came out i bought them in a snap but I find then lacking in midrange so I always wished I had gone for the e5c's.

I also have a pair of bose quiet comfort 2's which my father bought for some reason but used them once and can't be bothered to use them again so has passed them onto me. I do use them and they are nice for flying with but i find they get uncomfortable after a while.

I now travelling quite a fair amount so i don't get to listen to my home system much at all anymore which is a great shame, but I would like to make up for it by purchasing a nice pair of headphones I can use in my room wherever I am. I remember borrowing a senheiser hd 600 a few years ago which didn't enamoured me to be honest and a stax lambda basic ( i had the pair together from my hifi dealer for a few days ) which needs to be run off speaker terminals so I guess that's out of hte question for running off my ipod. I am wondering what to plum for now please (I do have a small DIY headphone amp which I used for the e4c's which has improved hte midrange but made the top end a little shrill at times and seems to have rolled off the bass at the lower end I bought it off a friend for about 20£ but he says it's worth about £50 I doubt this is good enough for the next set of cans but please adivise).

Thanks in advance.

So, to summarize/clarify -- you want a pair of headphones for home use, and you would like them to have more of a bass presence than you have gotten from your Etymotics in-ears ... right?

Any price limitations? Any brand not available where you are? Would you buy them in a store or online?

i would like to have an accurate bass response of the music I'm listening to and it not to bottom out if I were to put something a bit heavy on. It will be for home use so open headphones are on the table.

I would like to know what level should I move up to so that I can appreciate the differences and have the improvements I desire. If I were to buy a top of the range koss or grado etc, I'm not sure i would be able to apreciate what I would be getting as I would not have progressed through the ranks so to speak and miss out on all the fun that accompanies upgrading through the market. As with my hifi system i have worked it up from moderate to a high level and at each stage I have become used to the sound, pinpointed what is wrong and gone ahead and upgraded.

I would like to buy them online, I will be staying in LA for the next couple of months so my limitation would be whatever i can source from there.

I hope I'm making some sense, if not please don't hesitate to ask
