Hey guys..

I'm using an old pair of Sony MDR-V500 headphones since about one year and, yeah, I'm quite happy with 'em. The thing is, they're starting to break down. The cable rips at like four parts and duct-taping every little piece makes them really ugly looking.

Well, time to get new phones!

Whatever, I can't decide which headphones to take. That's where you guys come in - the experts.

I'm not a DJ, I'm just using my phones to listen on my iPod. I use them absolutely every day.. on my way to school, back from school, when riding the bus, and so on.. and that's why I like my V500s - they are pretty comfortable, doesn't matter where I use 'em.

I could make it myself pretty easy, I could just buy the same phones again. But that would be kind of boring, wouldn't it?
So this is where all my problems start. I can't decide which phones I should get. I'd really like to get closed ones again, but the varity is just too huge. And I'd like to stay under ~$120.

Well, do you guys have any ideas for new ones?

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

When I was much younger I was in a similar situation as you. My dad brought home some HD-25-SP's that he found in the trash at the university. Upon hearing them, I promptly liberated them from him. Hmm.. I owe him cans now that I think about it...

Cool, I'll check them out tomorrow, when I'm back in the city.

What do you guys think about the Grado S80s? Heard they'd have an awesome sound, but aren't too comfy. :/

Bus -> noisy -> open cans no good -> no Grados. (Been through this myself with Beyer DT231s, which do isolate a bit but not nearly enough for noisy environments.) If you do not intend to go the IEM route (can't beat those for portability, and frequently isolation is excellent, too; there are some in your price range), you're looking at stuff like K26P (my current portable cans), HD212, eH250, PX200 (provided they fit), HD25-SP, HD280 (Pro). The '280s could be a bit too bulky, and the PX200s aren't the bassiest cans around which isn't helped by common seal problems. Of the rest, the HD25-SP should be the most appealing model.

sgrossklass's recommendations for AKG K26P and Sennheiser HD212 are great for portable bass.

AKG K26P ($40, local Guitar Center) - folds up, very low profile, bass is very boomy and fun, supra-aural - the pads are small and go on top of the ears and not around

Sennheiser HD212 ($40+ online, $60 stores like Circuit City) - don't fold up, larger earcups that go around the ears, headache inducing bass

, great isolation from the outside world
