Try to find some cheap DT770, they dip down to around $100, example: beyerdynamic DT 770 Dynamic Studio Headphone 80 OHM - eBay (item 120389591890 end time Mar-16-09 11:53:07 PDT). Another you could look at is the D1001, but the DT770 (esp. with amplification) is the closest you'll get to "sub-like bass" without expanding your budget.

Alessandro MS-1 are pretty bass light phones, and more money is not the solution to everyone's problems. There's headphones to fit most people's needs at all price levels...

I'm looking for a replacement for my (busted) im716's. I liked they way they sounded, so something similar would be cool. I listen to all sorts of things, usually directly from my macbook pro, and I'd like to spend around $100. ER6 looks like a good choice, is there anything else I should consider? Also, does the ER6i lose anything in overall sound quality to get "greater sound output and enhanced bass"?

The HF5 would be a step up (it's compared to ER4) if you can find it for less than the $150 msrp. FWIR, everything Etymotic makes keeps pretty true to their company sound. You may lose some sound quality since im716 to er6i is likely a small downgrade.

What's the best headphones under $150 or £100 that will be the best possible headphones for Trance/Techno and some Rap. Won't order from USA as that would be waste, don't really need anything except some bass (not much but so they're not like 280's with anemic bass). No need for portabilty, they're for home use only

Need some headphones in the £100-150 region. At the moment I am currently looking at the D1001's and the ATH ES7. I listen to rock (Indie+metal), J-pop (Female vocals), techno, and house. Take into account that I will be wearing glasses, and comfort must be good for at least 4 hours.

ever tried the grado sr80 or sr80i? well under $150 and while no head pounding bass, there is some left under 80hz and pretty much sweet everywhere else.

i pretty much prefer the comfort of it over my shure se530s for late night multi hours sessions.
..and they are comfortable with all the different types of glasses i wear.
the thing about foam earpads like the grado's is no sqeaking noises like the pleather ones.

I own a pair of the SR-80's and I really don't like them too much. I find the full over the ear pads uncomfortable after about an hour of listening. The sound is pretty decent for the price of these, but like you said there isn't much bass to them.

I might actually try selling them (only a week old) and getting something more comfortable.

in order to get the level of sound ala grado sr80 with greater comfort,
you'll likely need to spend more

2 of many:

1. denon AH-D1001K $100
2. audio technica ATH-ESW9A $300

Thanks for the tip. I actually love the Grado sound, so I just purchased a set of SR-225s. They look much more comfortable than the SR-80s and I would assume even better sound.

the earpads used to be the same type between the sr80 and sr225 with only a slight thickness difference.

now the "i" series have a different pad for the sr80i

2) sr60i, sr80i, sr125i
3) sr225i, sr325i, rs2i, rs1i
4) gs1000i, ps1000

i like the grado sound a lot.

they have better sounding bass than the headroom charts show.
it's not the denon ah-d5000 bass but stronger than what the grado sr80i can give me.
i prefer the sr80 mids over the esw9a's

the strength is the comfort.
it's disappears after a while. can't say that about the grado.

Does the wood need looking after? (Like polishing with wax and that)?

I think it is the fact that the 225s pad isn't "on" your ear, but around it, like most cans. I have a pair of DT880s and the pads/overall comfort of those are amazing.

Question: How easy would it be to replace pads on the 225s? Note that I am not much of a DIYer.
