Can anyone recommend a portable hard drive? Here are some of my requirements:

1. It has to be powered by the USB (1.1, not 2.0) port. I don't want one that has to be powered by an external power supply
2. It has to be light (I need to carry it in a briefcase)
3. It has to work with both Win98 and Win2000
4. It has to be priced under $200

Does something like that exist?

Will this be for laptop use or for desktop use? Truthfully anything larger than a few gigabytes will take an insanely long time to fill up using USB 1.1, which maxes out at about 1MB/sec. Also running off the USB bus is going to be a problem.

What you could do is get an older mp3 HD player (archos, for example) that connects via USB and is self powered.

That's what I was thinking. I could use the Nomad Jukebox 3 to transfer files between my desktop/laptop. It comes with a $50 rebate right now, plus I can store music files on it (and copy them from LPs, which is a big selling point).

You've confirmed my fear about the portable hard drives--they can't be powered off of a USB port. I tried one (I forget the name) and it didn't work. I was hoping that there was a solution, but I guess not. Thanks.
