Hello! First post here, I have been reading the forum for a while but never posted.

I need some advice. I am currently looking at the deals on amazon.co.uk (I am in Europe) - there are Sennheiser HD 598 headphones for 75 GBP which is about 113 USD. The DT 770 is 5 GBP more expensive but I don't really care about that. In other words, price is not a factor - just which pair of headphones is better.

1) Location: I will be primarily listening to music at home. I take my headphones on trips, especially on flights, so isolation is a factor but a small one. It only really matters if the HD 598 leaks A LOT, meaning using it on a flight would disturb others even at moderate volume.

2) Source: My desktop integrated sound card (Asus B85M motherboard). No DAC, no amps but I might be buying one at some point down the line (not really soon so in essence I don't have ones). Very rarely my phone.

3) Music: A lot of variety here. I mainly listen to trance but also production music (Movie/Game/Trailer music), rock, metal, classical music, others... but trance makes up maybe 40% of everything so is the most important consideration.

4) Comfort is extremely important as I tend to wear headphones for long periods of time.

5) Past headphones: Bose SE2 (very happy with both sound and comfort, not so much with the build - the broke in one place, I managed to fix it and keep using them, later on the sound died completely... warranty expired); ATH-M35 (Still using them. Inferior sound to the Bose ones but not bad in itself. Decently comfortable, though again - worse than the Bose, mainly because they are a good deal heavier; They still work well, I simply want something better).

Thank you very much! If you need any other information, please let me know and I will try to provide it.

Neither of them will be useful on flights, as the HD598 won't block out ANY of the engine noise, and the DT770 won't fair well either with its velour pads.
In ear monitors or noise cancelling close-back headphones are the only real-world solutions for flying.
Even portables like Sennheiser Momentum are only OK on public transport, but really miserable at keeping out the loud constant hum of a jet engine.

HD598 will leak a helluva lot more than the DT770 though, and shouldn't be used outdoors as you'll be tempted to turn up the volume, disturb others, and damage your hearing.

For home, HD598 is better overall. DT770 makes more sacrifices to increase isolation slightly.
Both are supremely comfortable.

DT770 is a more robust headphone with a metal headband and can take a lot more abuse than the plastic sennheiser.

Thank you very much! I was hoping for more than one opinion but yours is basically telling me what I needed to know.

As for flights, I never really expected the headphone to isolate the engine noise. I am content with it isolating most of the noise from my fellow passengers, I don't mind the engine noise, my brain adjusts to it :). The 770 would be better in that regard and the HD 598 would not fare well in a noisy environment.

Furthermore, I might use the headphones on my next job, so again, the 770 is more suitable if the HD 598 leaks that much more (I shouldn't really disturb my colleagues, now, should I).

I take good care of my headphones so being able to take abuse is not necessary, as long as they both are resilient to regular wear and tear under normal use.
