I'd like some recommendations for a portable CD player. Currently I use a Sony discman (sports model) but its somewhat larger/thicker than I would like.

Here are my requirements:

1) small (slim)
2) rechargable battery
3) decent sound

Hunting around on Amazon, I found a Sony discman for about $150, which is more than I think I should spend.

I use Shure earbuds while commuting or in airplanes, and Grados while I'm roaming around the house.

THANKS!

If that is a Sony D-NE20, $150 is far cheaper than it should be. You will be surprised by its SQ. Highly recommended.

SONY D-NE at J&R for $159.99 + $6 S&H. NO TAX!

at Amazon (beware of TAX + S&H)

I actually got mine at Virgin Megastore here in Orlando for $149.99 + tax so it cost me around $158. (Looked at it and put it back in the box. LOL. Saving it.)
Very pretty and slightly thicker than the jewel case.

I have had a Panasonic and they are good too. Go to your local store at look at both if you are not sure!

Good luck!

I ask because I'm looking for a nice CD player (this one looks great) and it's £32.99, about $55-60, Which seems vastly under what is being stated here.

Yes, it is. But since it's being sold by a person (and probably used), I'd be very weary, as this _is_ the D-NE20 here. Read this review and see if you still want it:

Ah I see, maybe I'll just hang onto my HD3 when it gets back then... Thanks for the response.

Why not check out the D-NE920 (or D-NE900) or wait till they release of their 2006 line.

That looks more like the D-EJ2000. It says it's new, but it could be refurbished. There is NO way a D-NE20 could sell for under $100. Something just does not look right...
I don't like the seller's feedback rating. Caveat Emptor!

I have a Panasonic CT720 and it gets very little use. Why? It basically sucks!

Battery life is exaggerated - lucky to get 20 hours with CD-DA using the external battery holder and internal batts.

SQ - Normal is fine; however, the other presets distort. Amp is only 6mW per channel. Has a hard time fully driving phones higher than 16ohm.

Remote - Hard to see, cheap poor quality. Headphone jack on remote is so recessed it is difficult to fully insert some phones.

Supplied Headphones - joke

No Line Out - should have at this price

MP3 Playback - Can't fast forward, etc.

Price should be closer to $60 rather than the almost $100 price tag. Panasonic doesn't provide even a cheap case for this model.

Get the D-NE10. I just got one from our very own tattoou2 and I'm happy with it. It isn't my best PCDP, but it's still very good and makes an excellent companion on the go. It's definitely better SQ wise than I expected it to be, and easily the best of the modern PCDPs that I've used (and I've tried a lot of them, including the NE20). Unlike a lot of them, it actually has a detailed, fairly neutral, well spaced output to begin with that you can tweak with the Parametric EQ. The Line-Out is even better, IMHO. It's definitely a nice unit
