So I already own the dt770s 250 ohm and absolutely love them but I'm now interested in getting something with an open back so I can experience the larger soundstage. My budget is around $300. I'm Currently looking at dt 880s, beyerdynamic T90s, and the ath ad-900x. Any thoughts are welcome!

For 300 bucks you're well into the HD600/HD650 territory. If you are in the market for some amps I'd say to pick either of them if you have a preference for a natural and laid back sound that would fit almost any genre well.

As for your choices, I have heard the AD-900x on several occasions. Can't comment on the T90s and the DT880s, but for the AD900x it has a very intimate sound that goes well with vocals and has a pretty wide soundstage. It goes for around sub-$200 nowadays and I believe for that price, it is a great headphone to own.

I highly recommend the hifiman he-400 headphones. They are amazing and you won't regret buying them. I have mine paired with a schiit modi dac and vali amp. All this was bought a few months before the new versions came out (of course!, lol) but I don't regret it for a second. Huge improvement over the ath-m50s. Great sound stage, balanced, amazing detail, love the open sound, bass that can keep up with top 40 hits but not so harsh that it impacts the overall sound quality. I would buy a second in a heartbeat. My plan b was the hd600.

Do the he-400's need to be driven? I have a magni/modi desktop combo and a fiio E11. As of now I'm trying to decide between the he-400s or the T90's and they are about the same price right now too. I've seen that the T90's have a bit much treble which can be fixed with amps/EQ, but does anyone know if it is really THAT bad?

If you mean HE-400 not the 400S then yes they do much better with a bit more power the Magni should be fine I had a E-12 that also had enough power not for sure about the E-11 though. The 400's is the one I pick up to just have fun listening which is quite often. Some say speaker taps out of a vintage receiver is also quite nice just don't know if my old NAD is vintage enough got it around 83 or so.

Only ever owned Grado SR-125i's, SR-60e's, and just today received SR-225e's. Have loved them all. I've set my sights on the Sennheiser HD650's as my next can purchase. If for any reason, to try a brand that isn't Sony or Grado.
