What are the best headphones I can buy for $30 or less? Koss KSC75 and AKG K81DJ are out as they are not available readily where I am. I am looking to mainly use with my iPod, but will also use them with the home stereo system and maybe a little PC gaming.

KSC75 for gaming?

Are you serious?

I certainly don't stand gaming with them on. Short cable, and they are too small to provide 100% good positioning, so I might suggest the HD497 from Sennheiser (or HD477). These at least cover your ears. If you can find one for cheap (as I did), both does pretty much everything better than the KSC75. They are good for gaming too.

I would also recommend the great sounding MDR-XD200 from SONY, which is great for the price it sells at. Clear headphone with good bass response, slight coloration but they do sound great for 30$ too. They are totally on the cheap side (materials), but they are comfy, and do look hot nonetheless.

People here fight cheap SONYs, but I truly don't know why the XD200 should be considered on that "black" or "flaming list". Great cans for 30$. If I had bought them before venturing into the headphone world, I would probably be 100% happy now, and live peacefully with great sounding cans that doesn't cost a grand...

Under 30$: HD477 (open), HD497 (open) or MDR-XD200 (great comfort, sounds nearly as good as the Sennheisers offering, and block outside noise) (closed) (not the XD100, but the 200!)

Good luck on that one!

After consideration, I say forget about all these choices, and go with the K81DJ (55$) for isolation and music on the go. If you want something smaller but equally as good sounding, and cheaper, go with the KSC75 (15$), but they don't isolate. The HD477 and HD497 both sound better than the KSC75 IMO (approx. 20-40$). The MDR-XD200 would be more for gaming, but if you can tolerate using full-size headphones out of an iPod in public, it truly can be a great choice, because they are cheap and isolate well).

PERFORMANCE:

The K81DJ headphone is the best of all closed headphones you can find for cheap.

Then the HD497, or HD477

Then the KSC75 (best value ever though)

Then the XD200.

All of them are great choices for the money, and you definitively can't go wrong with any of them!

since you said about $30, Froogle for Phillips HP460
cheap, closed, decent isolation, reasonably comfy, don't sound half-bad either . . . . matter of fact they sound pretty good (has a bit of bass bloat though)

I used them before I stepped up to the 81, and I would recommend them. They're awesome for the price and very durable I found.

Philips HP460 for only 30$?

Now that is something to consider...
