i heard lift your skinny fists a few weeks ago (and if all goes well i'll have the double LP set by tomorrow this time ><) and since then it has kicked off a budding love affair with post rock. i'm into space rock, shoegaze, noise pop, etc and now i'd like some post rock suggestions. upon looking through AMG and asking a friend, mogwai, flying saucer attack, and labradford look like they would fit the bill; what things should i be looking for though? i really like the sweeping, instrumental soundscapes of lift your skinny fists and i'm looking for something like that. would their first album fit the bill as well?

Their two earlier albums Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada and f#a#oo(infinity symbol) would be good places to start. I think they both are better than Skinny Fists. The only other group I can think of right now even remotely like them is Sigur Ros. I haven't heard any of their work, but Explosions in the Sky might also be worth looking at.

GS!YBE is a very unique band and it's hard to really put another band in their shoes. for sure check out their other works. one band that come to mind is grails "the black tar prophecies". a little more tribal/eastern sounding but i like it a lot. i particularly like their use of unconventional instruments and sounds. not to mention they're a trip live.

you may like explosions in the sky as i see others have recommended but they're a lot different. the only thing really comparable is that neither band has vocals. other than that, the instrumentation, song arrangements, the mood, etc. are different

Check out Explosions in the Sky - The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place. It much lighter than GYBE!, but I love it.

EDIT: Wait. You don't have f#a#infinity? GET IT!!!

I actually prefer it to Lift You Skinny Fists. (BTW: You mentioned AMG; well, don't listen to their f#a#infinity review

Sparrows Swarm and Sing

And of course, as already mentioned, A Silver Mt Zion (I recommend starting with their oldest releases and working towards the more recent ones).

I also second Mono. While they're not really in the same vein as GY!BE, they're still incredibly amazing and, while relatively popular, aren't talked about as much as some other instrumental acts.

I am not going to try exactly, but you would probably like some of the Icelandic muscians like Múm, Sigur Rós, and Skúli Sverisson. I think Múm and Skúli in particular would be similar. Sigur Rós is excellent in general, so you should give them a try, but I think they are more structured than GYBE!. Skúli Sverisson has an album he did with Anthony Burr called "A Thousand Incidents Arise". You might like it.
And of course, there is always Aphex Twin. Richard James is probably one of the best musicians of our generation, so if you are not familiar with Aphex Twin, you should definitely check them out. I recommend Selected Ambient Works Vol. 2 or Drukqs. Mogwai was a very good recommendation as well. I like Ten Rapid and Young Team, but Happy Music for Happy People is also good.

Finally, if you just want really relaxing droning music, try Windy and Carl. Both Consciousness and Antarctica are great albums to chill to...or even sleep to.

One of my best friends here at uni runs http://afterthepostrock.com/forum/ I suggest that if you have, like so many people, discovered the utter earshattering epic awesome godlyness of post-rock music that you check it out. GY!BE really are the very top of the post rock game though imho.

It pleases me that your getting the vinyl. As an owner of all the cds and all the LPs let me assure you that the quality of the musical experience is 10 fold with the vinyl.

I can think of a lot of bands influenced by GYBE but not many that I'd really call similar. They're very unique. I agree with whoever said earlier that Grails and Sparrows Swarm And Sing are similar though. I'd recommend listening to A Silver Mount Zion's first album "He Has Left Us Alone...". ASMZ is comprised of Godspeed members (I hate to use the term side-project because they've released even more stuff than Godspeed).

If any of you haven't heard the band This Is A Process Of A Still Life, I highly recommend checking them out. Their self titled album is one of the best post-rock albums I've ever heard.
