hello all,

im looking to buy some 'second hand?' headphones for doing my open university degree at home with.

i will be using a laptop into a CA dacmagic, connected into these.

i play mostly rock music, metal and some classical.

i have heard the sennheiser 600's- they sounded too dull to me, the 800's sounded great!-but im not payin that!!!!

i also heard the grado sr60 and 80's- realy didnt like the 60's, the 80's were better but still to harsh for me.

what do i wanna get? ? i like a detailed sound with separation as the most important factor for me- but it cant be harsh. i like rhythmic drive.

im interested in statics but i assume bass will be very limited with them?

if i do have to make a compromise- i would sacrifice extreme bass for my goals.

idealy wanna pay £200- (about $300 or so)

whats mi choices??

Have you heard any Denon headphones before? I really like them for rock and metal. They're quite detailed in the high end, and the bass is tremendous. Also, I think they have a good soundstage for closed headphones. The AH-D2000s can easily be had for around $250 (at least in the States, anyway).

One pair of headphones that I would not recommend are the AKG K701/702s. I have a pair, and I absolutely love them for acoustic and classical music, but I don't think they do rock or metal very well.

They say the Stax SR-001mkII has more than enough bass respnse even compared to similiar priced dynamics. It's a bit hard to believe IMO becuase the drivers surface is so small BUT i've never heared one, nor any 'stats for that matter. I'd give it a try as a first option.

Other than those you can try a DT880 32ohm and AT-AD900, Both are very suitable for rock and classical.

never heard of the term "sennheiser veil"? i find unamped/underamped hd600 and hd650's to be pretty dull and zzz.

when amped well i find the hd650's to still be a bit "dull" for my tastes.

this would be a good discription for the sound to me.
i would suggest that in my semi pro opinion, the bass is engineered to be raised below 60-80hz at a guess.- this translates into a 'slow' sound. (in speakers anyway.)

i dont like over emphasised bass myself.- the mid range is where its gotta shine!

i will look into the suggestions and report back!
