So, nothing was on TV tonight so I watched Pleasantville and during the credits there was Fiona Apple's remake of John Lennon's 'Across the Universe'. After listening to it in a loop for quite some time, I am now looking for something with a similar or same sound; dreamy, with a female vocalist, very smooth. I usually listen to a lot of hard rock, Van Halen, AC/DC, Zep and this is the first time I've sought something in the non-rock genre!

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

I love her cover of the Beatles classic. The video directed by her then boyfriend Paul Thomas Andersen was also great.

There's a female vocalist named Erin Moran who records under the moniker A Girl Called Eddy that I think would be right up your alley. She has a similar smokey deep voice like Apple's. And her music is very smooth, dreamy, melancholy, etc. Lyrics are nothing like Apple's though.

Others in similar vein:

Beth Orton
The Sundays (do a fantastic cover of Rolling Stones "Wild Horses")
Hope Sandoval/Mazzy Star

There is a young actress featured briefly in Pleasantville named Jenny Lewis and she fronts a band called Rilo Kiley. You may want to check them out as well.

I don't know the song you mentioned but according to the description you gave (female, dreamy voice, smooth songs) I can suggest:

1) Sade "The Best Of Sade" and other CDs
2) Sarah Brightman "Eden", "La Luna"
3) Sarah McLahlan "Surfacing"
4) Kate Bush "Sensual World"

I think you can find samples on Amazon to listen to.

There are already a couple of 'female vocal' threads around here. Do a search to get some recos from them.

The three female vocal CD's that have made it into my top rotation lately are:

1. "That's Life" - Julia Fordham
I didn't think she could top her previous CD "Concrete Love", but she does, or at least matches it. Simply beautiful.
2. "The Forgotten Arm" - Aimee Mann
A continuation of her excellent "Lost In Space" album. If you're an fan, just get it.
3. "All That We Let In" - Indigo Girls
A very accessible album, with a smattering of song styles. Many influences are evident, and all good. I'm loving this CD.

All of these are very well recorded too, imo. Each is highly recommended.
