just as the title says, i need some good jazz music. i really dont know some good players, and it has to be more guitar oriented. been listening to some of Lee Ritenour and Frank Gambale's stuff. what can i say, im a guitar freak

. I play the guitar and right now im in my guitar virtuoso stage; i listen to Satriani, Vai, Eric Johnson, Greg Howe, Neil Zaza, Malmsteen, and all them guitar gods. i've always been fascinated by jazz, my dad also plays the guitar, he taught me how to listen to almost any types of music.

so guys, i need some recommendation

. oh, i listened to some of Paco De Lucia's stuff, jesus christ this guy can play!!! thanks in advance

Ok, first of all, to enjoy jazz fully I wouldn't reccommend listening to guitar-only Jazz. Being a guitarist myself I completely understand how you feel and I had the same approach to Jazz and it didn't work out for me. What really kicked me off in Jazz was Miles Davis' 'Kind of Blue', a must-hear as far as Jazz goes.

For some good jazz guitarists, well Wes Montgomery is probably my favourite. I can't reccommend any of his albums as I have been spending more time listening to Miles Davis, but I'm sure someone else on this forum could give you a few hints.

Off-Topic

As you claim to be a fan of virtuosos, a like I am, how can you say Yngwie Malmsteen is good? Have you listened to his music? Granted he can sweep pretty amazing but that's it. I listened to his set with Satriani & Vai on the G3 '03 tour. He ruined Hendrix's Red House I believe the song was. How can you even think about shredding arpeggio's in Blues music? He needs to let his ego deflate a little and learn some new techniques.

Satriani needs to learn from Vai aswell, in my opinion. I saw G3 when they cam to Nottingham last year and let me tell you, Vai owned Satriani.

Sorry about that little rant there, been needing to get that off my chest for a while.

Back On-Topic

Hope I helped you in some way or another. I'm sure you will get many more reccommended albums from other more experianced Jazz listened. I myself am new to the scene, and I'm loving every second of it

i actually agree with you on Malmsteen. the only thing i like about him is his Speed, thats it. i only listened to a couple of songs, then bought the new G3 dvd, and never listened to him again. he really does need to deflate his ego. a friend of mine went to one of his shows in NY, wanted to ask for an autograph, the mofo spat on one of his friends on the face, What!!!

and as for Satch, i really dont know why i like him. its not for his speed, but i think its the melody of the songs.

i might actually go out and buy that album you recommend just now

I know you want guitar based jazz, and you seem to be listening to mostly a more traditional style of jazz preformance.
But I have to fully recomend the experemental jazz group "Medeski Martin and Wood".
www.mmw.net

They are a electronic oriented jazz performance group. But other then that, I really just can not describe them. Go to their site and listen to some of the sampled tracks.

if you like guitar gods, and you want jazz recs... django reinhardt is THE guitar god. find anything he recorded with stephane grapelli at the hot club of france.

a modern, more esoteric, jazz guitar god is Marc Ribot. he's more daring and experimental than the virtuosic yet saccharine stylings of the likes of george benson, pat metheny, et al. I recommend his Los Postizos afro-cuban albums as a starter.

Good one. But did you have a chance to listen to Pat latest CD. It was a back to source kind of effort that can reconciliate most of us with this saccharine has been.....

I think I'd describe them as a type of Free Jazz. Whatever you call them, they're awesome. You can get some of their live shows free on bt.etree.org.

Wes Montgomery is good, too. I have The Incredible Jazz Guitar.

Joe Pass
Grant Geismann
Pat Metheny (already mentioned)
Wes Montgomery (already mentioned)
Eric Gale
Larry Carlton
Julio Fernandez
Russ Freeman
