I've been looking for some new headphones for the past few days, but the more I look, the more I get confused. I am willing to spend up to $400, so whatever fits the bill best up to that price point would be the winner.

I am planning on listening to a variety of things. Music, PC games, DVD's, you name it. Music wise I listen to a wide array of things. From Tool to the Schindler's List soundtrack. The headphones should shine in both. I play PC games like Battlefield 2 and FEAR. I watch all types of movies, Gladiator is a favorite of mine.

So from what you've read I listen to pretty much everything, and I plan on using these headphones A LOT, so I'll be needing something COMFORTABLE. I don't want my ears getting sore after a couple hours of use.

So basically it breaks down to:
Good all around headphones that truly shine in music, <$400, and feel like clouds sitting on your ears.

That's a toughie. Almost like asking for a map to the Holy Grail.

There may be something out there that's close, but the standard answer may be something like "Welcome to Head-Fi and sorry about your wallet".

You'll notice that lots of folks here have a fairly large number of phones in their collections, and that has a lot to do with the inability of most reasonably priced cans to excel in more than just one or maybe two areas.

But yeah; the K701 is one set that does a good job of covering lots of bases.

....there are others.

try the 595's. they are only 146 on amazon. they are probably one of the best all rounders there are. they are also very very comfortable. use the extra money to get an amp.

the 595's will do all of the music you listen to justice and it's a great movie watching headphone. it's also a pretty good gaming headphone. i say don't spend so much on the headphones (just yet) and get the 595's with an amplifier. you won't be dissappointed. i would say the k701's are for analytical music listening and not for an all rounder.

If you're going to get the HD595, it's been said that there's no worthwhile improvement with amplification until you spend $200+ on that end..

What sources are you using?

Based on what I hear from my 580 and HK receiver, yours should drive your 595 pretty easily.

Im looking at the Audio Technica ATH-A900, they seem to be heavily recommended for gaming. I wonder how they'd be for music. If only there was a place that had all these phones in stock where I could try them side by side. I tried to go to Sam Ash to find some of the models I was looking at, but they only had cheap ****. Pissed me off. They had electric guitars for 2k, but no headphones over 200. Woot!

You will be very happy with the A900 -- it performs very well for both music and gaming.
