My old budget was around $100... But I just had my graduation party and picked up an extra $1390.
So recommend me a phone based on the following...
Open Circumaural
The top of my budget is $250ish
I plan on building a CMoy amp for it this summer.
I listen to metal, ska, punk, and hip-hop.
Oh, and used is probably fine... but I'd prefer new I think?

Anything else you need to know?
Thanks...

i'd say (if your willing to bend on the circumaural requirement) that the SR225's sound great with all of those choices. I've owned a pair and I think that for the money (i paid 150 used, which is the going rate) they are a very good pair of headphones

a pair of SR225's (used) and flat pads will run you <$180

thats an extra 70 bucks for an interconnect and an amp

I was anticipating getting about $800-1000 and spending that on a desktop computer for college, but with all that extra... I decided to move on up to something around $250 max for the spending on the headphones, and maybe beef up the computer a little bit.

I say circumaural for comfort, because I plan on wearing these anywhere from 4-8 hours straight nearly every day during the summer while I'm working (I do mostly web design and other on-the-computer related jobs)

I'm going to second the 225s with flats...especially for your musical preferences. Buy used and be very happy.

I would say sr225 for the genre of music you listen to or something similar such as the ms1 or a used sr325i. The sr225 or ms1 would be the safer bet. However, for the amount of time you plan on using those headphones, I'm not sure if your head can withstand the grados. They get uncomfortable for me after half an hour or so.

Audition the DT990 05 model. You may like them. They are semi-open. I use those at home, but there are times when I would need/want closed as well for more silence to think or for playing music at a lower volume. I'm not trying to convince you of that, but it may be something to consider in the long haul (or maybe I'm just tempted by the Denon FOTM).

I would go with either the A900 or 225's. For the 225's: Great bass impact and an interesting sound will make those genres sound good. A900's have soundstage and a fairly balanced sound.

SR-225, and if you feel the highs are too much and bass too less, reverse the pads. Also you could get HD414 pads and quartermod them. Perhaps even reverse them.

Flat pads produce way too high-less and bass-heavy sound IMHO. Not as spirited as bowl pads.

I have K81DJs for closed, and marshmallows for when I really need isolation.
I need open, circumaural headphones.
I'll check out what I can in person. I think I want to try the DT series and the K601/701s.
I think Guitar Center may have some of these, what other stores can I try stuff out at?

And thanks to everyone so far...

DT770s will be great for hiphop but that's it. They SUCK for metal. Grados do metal best but the K701s are no slouch. Yeah, people are right saying they're not the best, but the detail is certainly euphoric

Hmm, I found this place...
http://www.morgansound.com
that says that they have AKG and Beyerdynamic products. I'll check them out next week (closed sunday, i'll be gone monday-friday)
i'll try guitar center, as well to see if they have grados...
K701 is appealing to me at the moment...

K701 for ska, punk, and hip-hop? What the? SR225 with flats or DT-770/80, without a doubt.

x2. K701 is closer to a pop/country/classical thing.
