You looking for high quality RECORDINGS of Van Halen or a starting point for the band?

Sorry if this is redundant, but Panama is on 1984 and is my personal favourite VH album. I'm not a huge fan though, so take that with a grain of salt.

Hmmm, eh... well? If you want Panama you should get 1984. Van Halen went through a few distinct evolutions with its various lead singers, each one markedly different from the other. People who like one version of VH often despise the others. Can't go wrong with Roth-era albums, you may find the rest of them hit-or-miss. 1984, the album with Panama was Dave's last full studio album with VH.

of course 1984... I like it the best. The early ones were good too. Anything past Roth is hit and miss (mostly miss).

I have the earlier CDs and the recording quality is mediocre but not terrible. I can't say what 1984 sounds like. Lost it years ago.

Funny if they only knew how far they'd plummet after that CD...

I can tell you that my copy of 1984 isn't too bad at all. It's the 2000 HDCD remaster and sounds perfectly fine, although I should admit that I have no other version to compare.

Also, I am definitely in the group that ONLY likes Van Halen with DLR. The years with Sammy Hagar in particular are too bad for words.

Van Halen is one of the best bands ever (despite some of the comments here

) and my favorite CD of theirs is Fair Warning.

Are you more of a guitar guy? If so, go with any DLR VH Cd,though 1984 is my personal favorite, followed closely by VH 1.

If you like keyboards/synthesizers go with 5150. It has some great music on it. Hell, get both.

Or you could go with:

Best Of Van Halen Volume 1 (1996)
The Best Of Both Worlds (2004)

Both of which contain Panama. Can't vouch for the recording quality though.

I have to put a plug in for Diver Down. I love that album because they seem to be having WAY too much fun and the band stretched musically in all kinds of directions. Just a kick-ass fun listen.

Yes. Eddie's best work, IMO. Very tough and raw on this one.
