I need to replace the batteries in my old Exide Powerite UPS.

It has eight CSB gp6110 F2 batteries. They are rated at 6V 11Ah. Apparently very few manufacturers make 6V 11Ah batteries anymore. So would 12Ah be OK?

Anyone recommend some good cheap ones? I'd like to keep the price of each battery as close to $10 or less, if possible.

I've found this site, which has them for $12.50 each. Not bad.
Is it a decent battery?

Changing the amp-hours rating only changes how long the UPS will run on battery power. It doesn't affect compatibility at all.

The biggest thing you have to worry about, compatibility-wise, is form factor and terminal type. Not all 6V 12Ah batteries are the same size, and not all have the same type of terminals.

Indeed not bad. Digi-Key wants over $16 for their similar offering. I think you should give up on your sub-$10 dream. You've probably already got it down to 1/3 the price that your UPS manufacturer wants for replacement batteries.

I don't know, but SLAs are pretty generic.

To the extent that it belongs on Head-Fi at all, I would think that it's most on-topic here in the DIY area.

Late night TV during a power blackout?

BTW, the batteries I am looking at weigh 5lbs each.

Assuming all the batteries are wired in series, this would be 48 volts.
You could get the same exact thing with 4 x 12 volt 11 AH batteries.
As long as it will fit, a slight rewiring job is all that is necessary. The
weight should be almost the same, but the price should be lower.

well i was looking at some sla batteries that weighed about a pound, 12v 1.3Ah. was planning on putting them in the enclosure, using them for a couple of hours a night, then charging during the day. means i can watch tv on the couch, bed, floor, wherever and not have to worry about anything more then the extension lead....

can anyone help me out in outlining any possible problems i may have?

Just make sure you have enough overhead that you don't always end up discharging the battery all the way. Lead Acid batteries do not like to be discharged completely.

Also be careful that some of the SLA batteries only like to be in one orientation (upright). I think the newer ones don't have problems being upside down.

cheers. i was planning on having a switch so it could be wall warted during daytime use and only battered at night or when i needed portability. i guess how well this will work, will depend on how much current my finaly configuration will draw....

With some help from others here (especially Tangent & Setmenu) I wired up a 12v 1.3Ah SLA to my DAC to see if the cleaner power provides and improvement.

The battery was reduced to £4.99, though a charger can be made I bought one £9.99. Being paranoid about zapping the DAC I have made a lead with a 2.5mm tip for the DAC and spade connectors for the battery with a small abs box in-line. Inside that I have fitted a schottky diode to prevent any reverse polarity connection screwing things up, and a rocker on/off switch. I will also be fitting a small fuse (just in case).

Have not had a real chance to compare between the psu & battery yet or on how long it lasts. Only finished it yesterday evening.

Maplins (A UK electronics & diy shop) are selling some of the SLA batteries quite cheap (well cheap for the UK). The next bargain up is £7.99 for a 12v 4.2Ah though it's physically much bigger and heavier. So I may buy a spare whilst they are on special.

On the other hand Norm (Tigger) of Headsave is selling a rechargeable 12v battery in the FS section, though it works out a bit more expensive
