The usual suspects:

Eva Cassidy - Live at Blues Alley

Christy Baron (musically not that adventurous, but great recording quality)

Cassandra Wilson

Rebecca Pidgeon

And the mainstream icon: D. Krell

In no particular order, these are some that I especially like with headphones:
  1. Diana Krall
  2. Christy Baron
  3. Eva Cassidy
  4. Loreena McKennit
  5. Linda Thompson
  6. Jane Monheit
  7. Sarah McLachlan

Slightly more obscure artists but well worth a listen (imho obviously!)

Landmarq - Science of Coincidence
Strangers on a train - The Key Part one
Strangers on a train - The Key Part two

The above bands all have the outstanding Tracy Hitchings on lead vocals, this lady is seriously underrated in todays music business.

Mostly Autumn -

For All We Shared
The Spirit of Autumn Past
The Last Bright Light

More a duet team with some male and female on differing tracks, start with The Spirit of Autumn past.

Karnataka - The Storm.

Good stuff well worth checking out.

Michelle Young -

Marked for Madness

This lady is so like Kate Bush its uncanny definitly check this one out if your a Kate Fan

Nightwish

Oceanborn
Wishmaster

More prog metal than anything listed above but you might like it.

Hope that helps if you want to try just one from that list then definetly check out Tracy...

if you're up for prog-metal, check The Gathering - if-then-else.

Kate Bush - Hounds Of Love. the obvious pick ofcourse, and shame on you if you don't already have it!

Loreena McKennitt can't be recommended enough

Just make sure you don't miss:

Lucy Kaplansky. A New York singer songwriter to die for. She has recorded four albums to date the best being EVERY SINGLE DAY and TEN YEAR NIGHT. Very post-modern albums with great recordings and very good tune and words to boot.

Alison Krauss. Anuything from her and Union Stationa and Alison with the Cox Family is sure to float your boat. This is female vocals / bluegrass at its very very best.

Natalie Merchant. To me she has released some great albums, but solo and with 10,000 Maniacs. Look out for the solo albums Tigerlilly and Ophelia along with the 10k Maniacs albums Blind Mans Zoo, Our Time In Eden and In My Tribe.

Shawn Colvin. Another evergreen talent and a much looked over on at that. Get the albums Fat City and a Few Small Repairs and you'll know what modern singer-songwriters sound like. Fantastic artist.

Trish Murphy. Trish who? Trish is sort of like Sheryl Crow but she sing! She can play guitar, write and she's prettier. A bit of an unknown at the moment but this live album will whet your appetite for listening to Rubies On The Lawn and her self titled album.

Cowboy Junkies. If Margo Timmins on The Trinity Sessions doesn't melt your heart then you haven't got one. You're the tin man! Seriously though, this is a must have album, the songs are to die for and the recording quality is superb. Another classic album everyone should own.

Cheers for now.

Sound As Ever

Not only a classic, but one that sounds great with headphones!

One word - "Ella"

For some more current:
"Diane Shur"
"Shirley Manson (Garbage)"

For something a bit out of the mainstream: "Imogen Heap"

You can't go wrong with these IMO:

- BEBEL GILBERTO - "Tanto Tempo" (Bossa Nova)
- MAIRE BRENNAN - "Misty Eyed Adventures" (Celtic)
- OCTOBER PROJECT - "October Project" (Folk Rock)
