I'm looking for some good Bebop up style jazz. It kinda has a rock beat, fast, loud, I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. THe intro song from Cowboy Bebop is a great example of what I'm talking about. I'd also like a recomendation for some mello, slow laid back jazz. Most of the time it's only 1 instrument. It's not necessarily sensuial, but just slow and melencohly (spelling?). My favorite instrument for this kinda jazz is saxophone, as it's the instrument I play. Lay the recomendations on!

For a good mix of the two try the Steamin' or the Cookin' with Miles Davis Quintet releases on Prestige.. both have the odd slow ballad (My Funny Valentine, When I Fall In Love (my favourite performance of this track), Something I Dreamed Last NIght) combined with much more uptempo tracks.. plus you get Davis & Coltrane at some of their finest

Blue note has some great bebop compilations as well as all genres of jazz. Check them out, the are usually cheaper because the are samplers.

Could you recomend an album or artist? Bluenote doesn't seem to have a search function for sub-genres of jazz.

Coltrane - Giant Steps is very uptempo.
Davis - Kind of Blue is a killer laid back album.

Anything by Coltrane and Davis in their prime and you can't go wrong.

Try Hidria Spacefolk (one full album downloadable at www.hidriaspacefolk.st). I don't know if this band can be called Jazz at all, but I found the album from a Jazz album shop, and it does have some similarities to Jazz, especially on the first album. Hidria is a finnish band and the albums are quite hard to get, but would be nice to hear some opinions of the downloadable album.

I don't know Cowboy Bebop, but there's a ton of great jazz on eMusic. Sign up for a three month membership and for the price of three CD's ($15 a month) you can download a ton of great Davis, Coltrane, Monk, etc. in LAME --aps MP3's. I'm downloading the $200 Bill Evans: Complete Riverside Recordings right now.

As for my favorite album, Coltrane's Master Tapes is it. It is one of maybe three albums I've had for over a decade and never thought about selling.

Mellow Jazz recommendation: Dave Holland Qunitet - "Points of View"

It a quintet, not a single-instrument but that doesn't matter. "Points of View" is a well thought out album featuring a great band leader (Holland is an Ex-Miles Davis bassist) and a top notch group of sidemen.

Also Dave Holland isn't egotistical on this album, so the sound is very even between all the players- he doesn't dominate or engage in what I call "musical masturbation". The whole thing is so laid back that if you listen actively to it in the beginning, it'll grab you and literally put you in a laid back spaced out mode. One of my favorites!

As a side note, if you like laid back jazz and a clean sound, it may be worth it for you for you to explore the music of jazz vibraphonists.....

I know of at least 2 versions of Kind of Blue. Look for the 24bit remastered one.

Add 'Bag's Groove' to your list. Very funky and accessible.

Michael Brecker "Pilgrimage"
 
Among the Top 10 jazz albums of all time IMHO.  Michael was gravely ill with leukemia at the time of recording and died a short time thereafter but you would never know it.  The arrangements, the playing and the recording itself are absolutely flawless.
 
Features the masterful talented line-up of Herbie Hancock, Brad Mehldau, Pat Metheny, John Pattitucci and Jack Dejohnette and the chemistry between these guys is amazing.
