I don't believe so. As long as they are in good shape and taking a charge properly they should sound the same as alkaline.

Never noticed any difference in sound quality when using rechargeable & Alkaline. I use both, but prefer to use high capacity (2500mAh) NiMH's in my Sony D-NF600, externally charged, though the player will charge them as well.

No. This is because alkalines lose voltage gradually as they are being used up (and their average voltage during their lifespan turns out to be only about 1.2V, the same as the nominal rating of a good rechargeable AA NiMH battery).

The only thing I ever used in my portable CD players was rechargeable batteries and there were never any sound issues.

It is actually more prefered to use rechargables nimh or lithium ion over non rechargables alkaline because their voltages stay more constant.
