Cant sleep so I thought I'd reply. A reciever is an amp, but its an amp, pre-amp, tuner,etc all built into one. An amp is strictly(someone correct me if I'm wrong)a device that amplifies the signal comming from a preamp. If you use the search function this question has been answered a few times before and other have done a much better job at explaining than me.
