I recently obtained (for nearly nothing

) some old 3-foot-tall magnavox speakers. I'm not sure what model they are and I need to get a relatively cheap receiver/amplifier for them. These speakers are for parties and non-critical listening situations. Ideally a receiver would be nice, so that I can connect it to my dvd player as well. It should have a bypass so that I can connect my headphone amplifier for more serious listening. Is there any hope for me?

One thing is for sure; I certainly would not hook your Porta Corda to a cheap receiver. Run it directly to your CD player.
I don't know what your price range is, but I would probably just buy a cheap Sherwood stereo receiver 100 watts x 2, unless you intend to upgrade the speakers later, which you would want to buy something a little nicer.

You can find good vintage stuff on audiogon in the receiver section all the time in the 100.00 range. Or look for a used Harman Kardon HK3270 or HK3470. They also make new stereo receivers HK3375 and HK3475. Alot of the vintage stuff had good headphone jacks on them also.
