I recently moved to a smaller place where the use of my main system's speakers is limited to when everyone is not home but me. I purchased an Emmeline HR-2 headphone amp and a pair of HD-650's. The sound is quite nice but the 650's being an open headphone it sounds throughout the house when listening at even moderate to low volumes. I need a good pair of closed headphones that I and only I will hear when listening. I have no idea where to begin. I like the sound of the Sennheisser'S as I always have. I had a pair of 580's years ago and even further back I had a pair of AKG K240's but now I am listening to my best setup yet but it is an open headphone and I am limited. I would appreciate suggestions on different high end closed headphones. Lets pretend cost is no issue just for fun. In fact it is and I would not want to spend more than the cost of the HD 650's HELP!!!

Denon D2000. Great for the price, close to the 650 sound. Closed can. Others won't hear you but you will hear others.

My personal std for a closed phone is Darthbeyer (I mainly listen to jazz, and classical.)...........outside of that, for rock/pop - a pair of Denon ( either D2000, or D5000).

edit: I should have told you why - slightly more forward midrange of the Denons are better suited to rock/pop - more like Grado with comfort.

How do you rate the D2000 vs say a k701? I love my 701s and all, but im lacking low end, i understand they dont have alot of that, but the high end is outstanding so far. I am getting a Little Dot MK3 soon and i hope it changes a little, but i want that tight low end sound, say for sweeps and punchy bass lines.

The d2000s being a closed can sound perfect for that, but im just wondering if they have the mids and top end like my k701s?

I was pondering the 650s but its up in the air at the moment.

considering you already have a speaker amp, the Koss ESP.9 electrostatic will be a good option. Closed, not expensive (this is not the same as inexpensive.....) and should have good sound. Heck I am listening to my ESP.7 right now, driven with my Kenwood receiver's speaker output, and I somehow prefer the ESP.7's sound to my 555's. I can only imaging the ESP9 will sound better since it was the flag ship model.

Electrostatics are great! Ought to give it a try....
