This is what I use to get videos onto my iPod. Works great, easy, and free open source software. For Mac and Windows platforms.

HandBrake

I think my sister said she uses iriverter for ripping DVD to mpg for her Zune. I may be wrong though.

*Edit*-It is the program she uses. Looks pretty decent too.

If you just want to rip the DVD I would suggest either DVD Shrink or DVD Decrypter.

I would second either of those.

DVD Shrink doesn't create mpeg4 or avi though, it will only make an iso or vob files. Try DVD Fab HD Decrypter, it decrypts and will convert for use on mobile devices and such.

Ah yes, I missed that part in his question. In that case you could use DVD Decrypter and AutoGK if you are looking for something simple and easy. ( Doom9.net - The Definitive DVD Backup Resource ) I would also go for Handbrake, as stated before, it might be even easier to use.

Handbrake is great on the mac, and sucks royally on pc's.
If you've got nero, you can use the ripper / encoder in that, of course, not on CSS protected discs, but I'd use AnyDVD to allow that. they also do a mobile dvd clone program that might fit your needs.

dvd decrypter is looking good

with the avex for iphone one the program skips to the actual start of the film (pst all the titles etc) then you hit record. and it copies the actual film to the hard drive, job done

is this capable of that?
