So. A friends cat got to the cables, but from what I can tell the drivers and shells are fine.

Would it cause any problems if I were to cut the cables an inch or so below the shells and replace everything below that? Just patch the new cable to the old and shrinkwrap it?

It may not be pretty, but if you solder it right and it's electrically sound and insulated, the sound will be just fine.

I ws planning to use a black cable, with a new 3.5mm plug, and have the shrinkwrap extend all the way to the shells from where I patched the cabling together

I'd like to open the shell, but i'm unsure as to how, and that said, I don't have very steady hands, or that good of eye sight. I know the end result would be more durable, and look much better, but I'm afraid I'm going to mess something up horribly, and have to go buy a new set of headphones.

BTG Audio did a fantastic job recabling my DBA-02's, with a Westone-type socket instead of hard-wired cable. I love 'em with the Westone EPICS cable (includes mic and single button remote)! Price was quite reasonable, and turn-around time was excellent. Brian has done several sets of DBA-02 Mk I this way.

Your original plan to cut the wire below the body and splice a new cable would be relatively easy, but I think the total recable or sockets would be nicer, more comfortable, and beneficial in the long run - you would the have replaceable cable!

By reasonable, how much do you mean?

Edit: Sorry, should have just checked the site myself. Thank you for the recommendation though!

Alright I've placed an order with him, for my DBA-02's and my Custom 3's which have desperately needed recabling.
That said, I've found everything I need but the connector for Westone sockets. I've seen people saying that some, UE connectors will workf or westone sockets, but I'm baffled as to if what I've found will. :x
I've come across 3 different connectors each from different sellers.

One(two ?) from Toxic cables:

This is one of the things that has me confused ^

Two from Luna Shops:

And another from someone i came across in a general google search:
