Has anyone done this? I sent my Sextetts back to AKG in '05 to have them refurbished, they changed drivers, cable (went to new style 1/4" plug with gold screw-on adapter), new elastics, new foam rings, new headband, new ear pads.

Obviously the drivers are going to sound decidedly different than the stock EP drivers from '75 did, but has anyone just swapped cables?

I'm curious if it has effected sound, and if the new cable is better or a cheaper unit. It sure feels better.

i'm not sure that late production 600-ohm dkk32 drivers are going to sound all that different from early-production 600-ohm dkk32 drivers. they might, i guess.

as for the cable, the current cable is pretty similar wire to the ridged type old cable, just different outer jacket. plus it's new and not all greasy and corroded.

as for sound? I've done it, i didn't detect a change in the sound, but i'm not a big believer in cable modding.

Thanks for the reply. Seems very few people have done a stock to new stock recable.

As for the drivers, from what I have read about the EP vs MP vs LP is that was the main difference in sound (mainly bass level). Is that incorrect?

I'm curious about recabling the K240s to Fitz's dual entry, but I think my money would be better spent buying another set of phones.

I think most of the changes in sound were due to the changes in baffles, determined by color of the backings of the passives, and not the drivers. However, I seem to recall a post Fitz made about a driver from an LP version not being doped, versus the EP and MP versions. Hopefully he'll see this thread and clear things up.
