[rant] So, I have been using yahoo mail for years, and for the last year, I have been getting it via Thunderbird. Everything was working fine until yesterday, when it didn't work any more. I hadn't changed anything, and suddenly the server wasn't letting me in.
"maildrop unavailable" was the first error message, and then "command valid only in authorisation state".
I send an informative and clearl email to the helpdesk, detailing my precise problem and I get back the standard, stock, patronising email response "is your caps lock key on?" and other such gems.
I have tried uninstalling, reinstalling, changing passwords, and nothing changes.
My best guess is it's a problem with the yahoo mail Beta they are trialling. The options page for "beta" is configured differently (apparently), and it's not working, so they are relying on the old one. I recon somewhere in the bowels of their server, the options priority is with the new options page, the broken one you can't access, and mine is set to "don't let him have his emails from the pop server".
This is all very distressing, made worse by the fact that like so many companies, yahoo don't employ helpful technical experts on their helpdesk, but morons with access to the same useless help pages that you yourself can access online. [/end rant]
