I'm guessing they're caused by a dirty power supply, so my question is, would a surge protector be enough to filter these out or will I need more expensive equipment?

What equipment is doing this? The same thing started happening to an old Luxman receiver I had and it turned out to be bad capacitors that had dried out from age.

It's a Pioneer A400 amp. It's not mine, so if I had to guesstimate it's age I'd say around 8 or 9 years. It's been in pretty-much constant use though.

It's something you could try if the surge protector states that it also acts as a line filter / power conditioner.

Also try taking the amplifier to a different location (i.e. a different circuit) and plugging it in.
