I remember reading sometime back a debate whether or not covering the open back of the higher end Sennheisers (580, 600, 650) can damage them. Certainly covering the transduceres makes them sound worse, but Sennheiser also puts a warning in the manual not to do it. Anyway, I originally thought it was bunk, how can having the transducers covered conceivably be harmful? But, then I remembered that Stax cans need to have something between them when burning in,or they can be damaged.

So, thoughts? Is this an urban legend we've started on Head-Fi, or is there something to it? The main reason I ask is that the open design makes them plenty loud burning in, even in a drawer--I'd love to be able to cover them with a towel to damp this sound, but not at the risk of hurting them!

«Urban legend» is the keyword. Neither Stax need any cover nor Sennheiser are endangered by it during burn-in.

Haha, thanks Anders. Also, thanks for the serious response to the question, it had been bugging me for a while.
