I'm not really very happy with my UM1's... I'm always more likely to reach for my MS1's that my UM1's, and that's not what I want. I wanted my UM1's as a home alternative to my MS1's, that I could use if people were making noise around the house or playing the BIG grand piano in the living room...

While the isolation is fine and the sound is good, its seems like its not on par with my MS1's. I don't think I really expected them to be though and I kinda rushed into buying them without much thought or research, because I was bored and felt like buying something

Next time (if there is a next time) I will be more careful.

And that is why I am posting this thread. So that if I get another random buying whim, I buy the right thing.

Now here's the point (all you lazy people just read this):

What IEM would sound similar (if not better) than my MS1's?

It must isolate as well though, and be fairly comfortable.

I do like my MS1's sound signature, but I haven't tried anything else, so if theres something that has as good sound, but with a differnt signature then that would be OK.

My budget is under $150.

So, fire away

Hmmm ... just enjoy the grand piano!

Seriously though, my HD-280 Pro has great isolation and I like its sound better than my MS-1.

Ive always had better experiences with full sized headphones but...

The etymotic er-4 line is a good place to start if you want some similar characteristics to your Alessandros. Not a recommended IEM for bass heavy music though.

I've compared enough prices to know NOTHING in New Zealand is anywhere near cheap or normal priced

. I would probably get it from a US source with reasonable shipping, such as Amazon.

If there is a closed can which sounds as good as my MS1's and is cheaper than an IEM alternative, then fire away. I've listened to the HD280pro and I thought it didnt sound very good and was uncomfortable.

I was thinking about ER4's. How bad is the bass? I think that the bass on my MS1's is really really good qaulity, and there is PERFECT amount. If the ety's have any less than that, they probably won't do. What about the im716's? I heard they were as good as the ER4's, but cheaper...

You might take a look at the AT ES7s. Search for it.

Mooch

I thought that they weren't anywhere NEAR as good as the MS1's... Some reviews say they sound 'honky... They look awesome though!

Any other sugestions?

did you try them? You might be surprised! Never discount headphones without hearing them!

I can't try them though... No shops in Christchurch sell AT's as far as I know. Plenty of AKG's though...

What bout IEM's?

I was also looking for an IEM that sounds somewhat like a MS-1, and settled on the er6i, so I'll get back to you on how it works out. But my budget was also lower than yours, so I didn't look too much at the $100+ phones. I was also considering the d-jays though. The im716 would be great, if only you could get filters for it.

But honestly, you shouldn't be expecting any IEM to sound better than your MS-1 in this price range. People have claimed that the MS-1 sounds like a $150 to $180 headphone, and IEMs just can't compete with full size headphones at the same price. You're paying a premium for portability, and sealing off your ear canals with an IEM means it will never sound as natural or airy as your MS-1.
