Radiohead: what next?

Pablo Honey has Creep on it and that's about it. I would go with KidA or possibly Amnesiac if you're into a slightly more dancy (not the best term, sorry Radiohead fans) feel.

Definitely Kid A. You can follow the transition straight from Ok Computer into this album, which is up there with OKC for me as one of their best. Amnesiac is good as well, but as a complete album experience Kid A is incredible.

I'll offer a differing view. Kid A and Amesiac are great albums (and are really parts one and two of the same album IMO), but I think they should be saved for last due to their relative inaccessibility. My recommended next step after OKC would be Hail to the Thief. Once you've assimilated that, you will be better prepared for Kid A/Amnesiac.

My opinion...

I can see where Doc is coming from, hail builds upon the kid a/amnesiac motif and kind of leans mroe towards song orientation. Hail to the thief is much more song oriented, so in some respects its slightly more digestible.

However, KidA by far is my favorite radiohead album by far. I hated it at first mind you, was very closed-minded to what it had to offer, but when i heard the kidA songs live in Chicago 2001 and hearing the basic fundamental construction of the songs in a real live aspect opened it up to me. Now, i can barely go through a day without listening to it!

I started with Ok, then got the bends, got kida, amnesiac, and then hail - so i say go with kidA, you'll probably hate it, then get hail, and sometime in the future kidA will hit you.

I had a similar experience hating "Kid A" initially then gradually appreciating each song after seeing their live concert shows on MTV and on special radio appearances.

I agree with mostly everyone on here too in going with "Hail to the Thief" next, since "Kid A" and "Amnesiac" lean somewhat more on their artsy-fartsy side and are somewhat difficult to listen to initially. Listening to "Hail to the Thief" first will remedy that IMHO.

I really liked Pablo Honey, a lot actually, and felt that there were a few gems besides Creep (Stop whispering being one of them). That said, The Bends is likely their tightest album overall, and the most easily listenable, even though OK Computer is their most widely acclaimed. I prefer Kid A to OK Computer, and I view Amnesiac as more of a "disc II" to Kid A vs. an entirely new and distinct album. So if you go Kid A, get both at the same time, they were recorded at the same time anyway. Then go Hail to the Thief. Oh, and Radiohead just finished recording their new album, should be out by year's end or early next year.

I too like Pablo Honey quite a bit, although each of their albums is awesome in its own little way.

kid A + Amnesiac , I couldn't choose one over the other ( they are the same project and both on their own incredible albums , still different and worth getting together )

They were recorded in the same sessions. Very good together and very much so, a worthy inclusion in any collection.

i would get Kid A AND Amnesiac. they are really 2 halves of the same album, and belong together.

[edit: i posted this without reading the other responses, so i guess it was a bit redundant

Just get them all, lol. They are all different albums, each with its own merits. I really enjoy all of them, too.

haha, I've recently gotten into Radiohead myself. I started with Hail to the Thief about 4 months ago. It was in heavy rotation for several weeks and I really dug it.

A month later, I got OK Computer and I liked it even more.

In May, I picked up The Bends and it surpassed the first two.

Yesterday, I received Kid A and I already like it a lot. I've listened to it about 4 times since I got it 12 hours ago. Kid A is a lot more electronic and bit further out than the first three, but that's why I like it. I've already latched onto that electonic sound in a big way, especially around Idioteque.

I can't speak for the Pablo Honey or Amnesiac, yet, but they're the ones that are up next for me.
