a review of the hsa-1b...for those interested

The RAAL REQUISITE SR1a, together with the brilliant HSA1b, once again climbs the sound olympic on Musicalhead and displaces the ABYSS AB1266 PHI TC from the throne after many years of reign.

The RAAL REQUISITE HSA1b receives my unconditional recommendation to all knights of the grail of fine tones, who primarily prefer audiophile reproduction properties and an absolute maximum of authenticity in combination with the SR1a and can conciliatly do without the ultimate depth.

Fantastic review! I really miss stumbling through reading and speaking German.

It is quite bold of you to chose the SR1a and HSA-1b over the 1266s. I can’t really argue with you until my WA33 and 1266s get here and there is no guarantee that I will after they do:)

The only thing I ever felt was missing from the SR1a’s was bass. Specifically, deep registers and hard impact and slam. The AS filters do help in that regard, but I still suspect the 1266’s will blow them out of the water. It’s like you said though, the SR1a’s are definitely best for a certain ear and taste. Honestly, the longer I listen to the SR1a’s the more I appreciate them. I will also say upgrading my source took the them to another stratosphere. Exquisite is the only word I can think of to describe the sound coming out of these.

In any case, thanks again for the review. It was an excellent read!

Got to listen to Mitch’s filters today, and I must admit I’m blown away. They really changed the headphones for the better for me.

I tried today the JotR’s baffle compensation, my own parametric EQ, and then all three of Mitch’s convolution filters. Without a doubt the latter ones were the winners. I especially liked FS3, the one with bass and treble extension, and it is now my new daily listening setup.

Cannot recommend this change enough, especially if you already use Roon. It’s dead simple to setup and the results are outstanding!

Curious to see how they do on your setup!

Forgot to mention, but my path was:
Media server -> Bifrost 2 -> Freya+ w/ PSVane 6SN7 -> Jotunheim R -> SR1A

Came here for the First time and wanted to post a link to the review, you beat me to it.

Also interesting in the review is, that the RAAL in conjunction with his own Amp even outclasses the Warwick Arperio and Sennheiser He1!
That's quite the praise.

Guys I need some help. I just bought Mitch’s filters for my SR1A.
I receive the email with the file and downloaded it to my iMac. My Roon core runs in a Small Green Computer i5CDR.
Moved the 3 files to a folder in the i5CDR. When I try to create the first filter using the iMac and try to select the path to the file it only shows me paths to the hard drives connected to the iMac even that it is connected to the same network than the i5CDR.

The I try to create the filters from my iPad and it is telling me this device is not supported and should be either Windows or Mac operating system. I know the i5CDR runs Linux. Does this mean I canot use the filters? Or how should I install them in my configuration?

Thanks,

I ran them off my pc and use a Zenith Mk3, which is Linux based. Put the the zipped filters on your mac’s desktop. Turn on your Linux source, open up roon on your Mac and you should be able to direct roon to the filters on your mac’s desktop.

If you’ve already done that, I’d write Mitch. You can’t be the first person trying this in a mac. Good luck

For people using the Raal with the HSA-1b and the WA33 or any other amp as a preamp, how do you have each dialed in volume wise (and your DAC)? To my ears, the Raal sounds a bit more transparent through the HSA-1b by itself, but seems to have slightly better bass through the Woo. These are not huge differences, but just trying to settle on whether I use the Woo as a pre or just have the HSA straight from the Dave. Any insight is appreciated!

as an owner of the sr1a and the hsa-1b(which I love) the thought of using the wa33 as a preamp doesnt seem all that cost effective lol
