If I got the sr 2050a system would I need a stereo amp to put behind it, or just plug it into my source? Thanks.

it is an amp, just plug it into your source.

I have the 2050II and it is connected directly to my CD player. Works great. The only reason to connect it to your stereo amp would be to use it as a preamp.

clarification, to use the stereo amp as a preamp is what Allen means (helps when the source is weak, or sounds the wrong color, so to speak), not to use the SRM-252 as a preamp, which wouldn't work.

That's what I meant -- thanks for the clarification. I love my Stax!

No, it have a built in amplifier.
Just hook it up directly to your source (CD player, computer, ...), using RCA cables, and enjoy.
