Hey, I'm really looking into it being worthwhile for me, a poor, music loving, college student, to buy an amp (thinking mini 3 atm).

My father has a decent receiver, which has a headphone out, and I'm wondering: would that be an example of what a decently amped signal?

The receiver is a Sony STR-DE505 ( http://img502.imageshack.us/img502/4...trd5051qd9.jpg )

Grado SR-80s would be plugged in.

I find that using the "phone out" on many receivers can be hit and miss. Most of the time it is a miss.

From what I've found, many headphone stages built into receivers (and higher end integrated amps for that matter) are poorly designed, and badly implemented.

The only real way to test the quality would be to test it against an amp which you (or someone near you) knows well.

I have Yamaha Natural Sound Stereo Amp A-420, old and vintage - been using the headphone out before I got my first true headamp, and they sound totally FLAT compared to normal headamp.
