Hello guys,


I'm new to Head-Fi and have been reading reviews and threads all day. I currently own a set of white iPhone ear buds!


They were free with the phone. LoL
I've never used any other pair before

I have never used nor heard any Audiophile headphones before and need help making a decision.





I play lots of PC and PS3 games like Crysis, Call of Duty, BF2 etc etc


I also listen to techno, drum n bass, electro house and hard rock.


Am I better off buying the AD700 for games ( due to it's incredible soundstage and them only being $85) and get different headphones for my music?


I thought maybe spending the extra $$ for the AD900 would close the gap as far as bass goes

Depends. I'd honestly wait a little while to make sure you're getting what you want. What budget are you looking at? Would you consider getting an amp/dac?

The AD700's are also fantastic for music.
 
I would say that you should buy the AD700's, get used to them, and then decide if you want another headphone for music.
You'll be able to make a much more informed decision after using the AD700's for a few months.

I would go for the AD700's for now, due to their incredible price. Then, if you find you absolutely love them to death, find room to upgrade to the AD900's in the future.
 
Don't worry about AD700's bass, it isn't a problem. It has great bass, but it's the kind you hear and not necessarily feel. It's actually very deep, and there is always the EQ.
 
I just can't seem to justify the AD900 being more than 3x expensive than the AD700. I'm sure the difference isn't that big, so I would just get the AD700's for now.

AD700s would be good, but I'm not sure whether they'd satisfy your music needs.

I really don't have a budget. I just want to make the right decision the first time. I was going to get the CmoyBB 2.02 Altoid amp from JDS Labs

What would be you source for listening to music? The AD700 has almost no bass with an iPod, but this can be adjusted through the use of a more powerful player with a decent EQ... Sony and Cowon come to mind.
Looking at frequency response graphs at headphone.com, between the AD500 and the AD700 things don't change much... this may carry over to the AD900 as well.
 
I think that an open headphone from Beyerdynamic would suit your needs better than Audio Technica if you like bass. Try the DT770 or DT880

Alomst everyone who buys ad700 ends up selling them after a short while, they are great headphones but the low bass will eventually get to you and you more than likely will want to upgrade I say go for the ad900's

I don't mind buying 2 sets of headphones. If the AD700's are comfy and give me the great sound I need to hear gunfire, footsteps, and other effects I'd rather have one set of headphones for gaming and another for my drum n bass tracks. What do you think?

That may be a good idea. That's what I would do in your situation. What would your budget be? I'll preemptively suggest Ultrasone.

Thats a pretty bold statement.... and I very much doubt that it's anywhere near "almost everyone"
 
and I doubt that the AD900's have any more bass than the AD700's

I have ATH-A900 for gaming (I like the closed feature to keep noise in from the family), If your playing in your own room or living alone AD700 or AD900 would be fine, get the 900s it will save on upgrading later.
And..........
If your looking for something that could work with your ipod too, I don`t recommend the above headphones, sound is fine and ok, but they are huge and you will look like an off duty fighter pilot or something.

I don't care what I look like in public and I don't mind the headphones being loud either.


My budget is around $350. Is the CmoyBB Altoid amp any good? I have a laptop with an external Creative X-Fi Sound card an iPhone and an iPod. That's where all my music comes from.


I just can't see the logic in spending $279 on the AD900 when the AD700 is basically the same headphone for $89.99. Right??


I also plan on having a guy I found on Head-Fi do a detachable headphone cable and mic mod too.

Sounds good... get the AD700 with Mic and detachable cable, just make sure you are getting the cable for its functionality, as it will not improve the sound.
