Thanks for the reply. I live in Jersey, Channel Islands and we have no specialist dealers, so I always have to purchase on reviews and recommendations.

I really like the T5p2 balanced. The soundstage from the T5p2 is amazing, with a lighty U-shape so you have a bit more bass, but in a pretty way. Where T5p2 can be a bit bright with the wrong gear, the match with the QP2R is great and musical. I realise it's a matter of taste, but I really like it for every style of music. The second best is the Campfire Cascade. It's a bit darker sounding but with an (expensive) cable upgrade it's great. But the soundstage is more 3D on the Beyer. I listened to the Focal Elegia, Final Audio Design Heaven VI, Oppo PM-3, Audeze Sine.

The Elegia is a bit bass light
The Heaven VI has a very low bass, but is a bit midbass light and missing speed. Voices are fuller on the T5p2 too.

I wonder how the QP2R compares to the AK Kann. The latter seems better to me now as a QP1R owner.

As a former owner of the QP1R, current owner of the QP2R which I'm about to sell, and re-buyer of the AK Kann (yes, owned it, sold it, and purchased one again when I came to my senses), I personally feel the Kann is superior in musicality, functionality, and power. Though I would agree with Bart147 in that I think the QP1R is more musical than the QP2R, so I could see a preference there over the Kann. I've come to love the Kann because its the only DAP I've ever known that has chops to stand alone without added amplification. Kann and AK120II are my favorite DAPs, though I alwas pair the latter with a portable amp (great matched with the iQube V1 amp).

If I were looking into a Questyle DAP, knowing what I know now, I would go for the QP1R instead. The best sound out of my QP1R was when I paired it via line out with, for example, the Headamp Pico Power. Sacrificing the line out for balanced was a bad move IMO because even in balanced mode the QP2R power is...meh.

There'll have to be something revolutional for me to move from the QP1R. It even does a good job with my LCD-X.

With the above in mind, what's the volume levels like with the Shure SE846 non-balanced?

Looking at the Questyle site, there is very little between the QP1R and QP2R via the non-balanced output. Is that not the whole story?

Also, is the volume on the QP2R non-linear? By which I mean, is the increase in volume between say 50 and 55, greater than between 20 and 25 in 60 step mode.

I'd really like an answer to any of the above questions. I only have fairly hard to drive IEM's and am wondering if more sensitive ones would help that much. I find the QP2R has a lack of volume compared to my QP1R, although they measure about the same. 38mW (QP2R) compared to 40mW (QP1R). Songs on the QP1R that listen at 40, on the QP2R I listen at 50.
