Yesterday I ordered the 963sa. I have some question about it.
Do I havve to have the TV connected all the time or is it just the first time to configure it? Do I have to make a lot of choices in the TV-menu? Or can I just connect it to my stereo-rig?
Anything else I should think about??

Very thankful for answers!

The only thing I find annoying is that you need to use the OSD to change the upsampling rate from 96kHz to 192kHz and back. You can turn the upsampling on and off from the remote but not change the rate. Other than the initial configuration that is the only user interface control that I use enough to warrant comment.

If you buy DVD-A discs, you'll also need the screen because you can't just pop em in and go. The biggest drawback with DVD-A, is the fact that like regular DVDs, you have to select which version of the soundtrack to play back-- 2-channel stereo, Dolby, DTS, DVD-Audio surround. There is no short cut on any player I'm aware of. I wish there was a way to program a player so that it automatically defaults to full-res stereo track but there isn't, typically it defaults to a multi-channel setting. Then you have to manually go in using on-screen menus to select the stereo tracks. Some day they'll solve this...

Yes the upsampling rate can stay the same. However, I have noticed that not all discs sound their best at the same upsampling rate. I have a few older CD's that sound their best, to me, at 96 kHz. Most of my newer discs sound better at 192 kHz or off. Therefore I like to change the sampling rate to try this out. I actually have it in my HT setup so it is not a huge deal to me. I did use it a little in my headphone rig and I found that inconvenient.

BTW The 963sa plays DVD-V, SACD, CD and MP3 but not DVD-A.

I read in a product manual that you could switch between 96 hz and 172 hz with a button on the remote control... Why is it not possible to switch between 96 hz and 192 hz? How do I switch to 192 hz? This seems to be very strange.....=(

Martin...

...to change the sampling rate you need the screen menu. One thing that bothers me too. The default setting is 192 kHz upsampling on.

No, the choices are upsampling off or 96/192, whichever you have selected through the menu.

Wow, I hadnt realized that. I only had my 963 for a few days of listening before my ear surgery. I bought it to use exclusively in my headphone system, which is located in my pc workstation, two floors away from the television. Damn, this could be a problem.

I found that at the 192 setting ALL of my CDs skipped. I tried 10 or so and every one did it to one degree or another.
I switched it to 96 and haven't had a problem, even on some pretty mangled discs that skip on the car Infinity & the Yamaha.

Unfortunatly, I thouht the sound quality in the places between the skips at 192 was better than at 96.

Anyone else have the skipping problem?
How about sound at 192 vs 96?
