Does the SlimX IMP-350 play MP3s recorded at both 128 kbps and 160 kbps? What rate is best ? How good do MP3s from the SlimX sound though HD600s and SR325s?

The slimX will play just about every type of mp3 you can imagine. All bitrates, CBR, VBR, even some VL types (though a few VL types burned with musicmatch were giving someone some trouble). The higher the bitrate, the higher quality the sound.

Both those headphones you mention will benefit a LOT from having an amplifier. The grado will do better than the senn though, if you don't have an amp. With an amp, the HD600 will probably win out.

If you are going to use such nice phones with the SlimX, make sure you get a quality amplifier to go with it, and that you rip your mp3s at the highest bitrate you can deal with. at LEAST 160, preferably 192 or more.

Dont go nuts over the hiss issue. It isn't a problem .... except with efficient phones IN a QUIET environment it is a major problem to me. Even then most people around me don't notice.

Guess I have golden ears
