sometimes i play music through dt770's and from the right earcup the sound disappears for a second or so and i hear a static, high frequency sound instead, like a cd just skipped or something. this does not happen in the left earcup. the cable from source/amp to headphone goes directly to the left earcup of the headphones. this happens very rarely, but enough to make me frustrated/concerned.

is that clipping, or is there a problem with the right earcup?
i'm only using 9v on the supermini, but the problem occurs with about the same frequency when the headphones are hooked up directly to my source.

That doesn't sound like clipping. The fact that the sound disappears for a moment and then you hear static makes me think you may have an intermmittent connection to your right earpiece.

on both my MD player and computer i am using mp3's that have been normalized (using mp3gain). could this be the culprit?

The only positive way to find out if the MP3s are the culprits is to gain access to another source such as a CD player.

thanks for your help.. i just got these beyers two days ago (used) so i hope there's no intermittent connection problem. i don't know what i would do if there was..

this kinda sounds like my experience using the senn HD580s with the grado RA-1 amp. the sound would 'crap out' in one channel. ‘crap out’ meaning one channel would get intermittent static. i sent the RA-1 back to grado and they said there was noting wrong with the unit. so the problem was using a power-hungry headphone with the wrong amp.

i think you're likely to run into problems using a 9v amp with the DT-770s. the DT-770s need some power. and a mini-disc player is not known as being able to output a lot of juice.

you'll need to try the phones on a receiver or amplifier. these can pump out a little more power. if not, try them using a regular CD player's headphone jack.
