Ok, here is a question for you!

My wife is graduating from school in May. I would like to get her a Stethoscope as one of her Graduation gifts. I would like to get her a decent one, say in the price range of $100 - $150. The only problem is that I don't know jack about Stethoscopes. Can any of you Doctors /Med Students, etc recommend a decent Stethoscope for me in that price range?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I got the 3M Littmann Cardiology III. I don't recall the exact price, but it was somewhere in that range. It is a pretty popular one among med students, and I have been happy with the quality and performance so far.

It also comes in multiple colors of tubing, so you could get creative with a purple one or something

Any Littman will do fine. Make sure to get one with a bell and a diaphram on each side.

I'm a real nerd so I'm probably going to get an electronic one soon :P

edit: is she graduating from medical school? If she is once she enters residency she should be able to get nearly any Littman at the hospital's cost (saves a lot of money).

Also I might have had a dud, but I wasn't a big fan of the Littman "Lightweight" I had 2 years ago.

Littman Cardio III is perfect. And it is also in your price range.

Don't bother buying a better one unless she goes in cardiology. Also, the cheaper ones a really a pain in the ass for listening to B3-B4.

It's kind of like a headphone sourced by someone's heart.

Hi, I'd recommend Littman as well, I've used a Classic II for many years. Or, you could try what one of my sneaky colleagues did - go to the hospital staff cafeteria, and say that you've lost your stethoscope - a large box of assorted scopes will be pulled out for your perusal! But that's not very ethical...

I use a Litmann Cardiology III. It's dual tubed and has 2 dual frequency diaphragms, one for adults and one for kids. It also comes with a bell attachment so you can convert the paediatric side to a traditional bell. The Cardiology III is probably the most versatile high-end Littmann The more expensive Littmanns are single diaphragm and have electronic features the higher you move up.

Dual lumen stethescopes are many times more sensitive than the single lumen ones. I have used both and can hear so much more with my Cardiology III (bass extension, soundstage...

) If your wife wants to do paediatrics the Cardiology III is probably the best option

Since this is head-fi, check out this Bose stethescope.

here's a thought: maybe the last thing she wants to see right now is another ****ing stethoscope?

I'll agree with the.. who wants to see another stethoscope idea.

Littmann Cardio III if she's going into family medicine or something

and

But I suggest the Littmann Master Cardiology if she's going into Internal med or some other non-pediatric specialty as the diaphragm on this thing is enormous(it's hard to distinguish between different valves of the heart if the dang diaphragm covers up the entire kids heart).

allheart has them for $138 and is very reputable dealer( and no, i don't work for them or anything)

and since we're head-fi around here.. I'll through in the amplified steth- ipod connectivity feature

200 bucks, that's almost the same price as my Cute Encore amp. I wonder how many watts it puts out... hummm
