Recently I acquired an L3000 in pristine condition. This has become my 'ultimate' headphone to settle into long-term (famous last words). While I honestly thought the PS-1 was incrementally better (at least for my taste in music - jazz, rock), I needed a closed phone solution with new baby, and a wonderful wife who is nevertheless critical of this hobby - so it's L3000 for me! (btw, PS-1's are now in the possession of my comrade-in-arms here in HK, fkclo).

So the questions...

1. How do you care for the L3000 leather? Or do you need to do anything at all? Last thing I want is the leather to crack, peel, or deteriorate over time.

2. Is it prudent to secure replacement leather earpads in advance? I suspect AT will be around for awhile, but will they continue to supply replacement pads in the future?

thanks for any input from L3000 owners.

1. I have had mine for 2 years and done nothing to them other than wipe them with a damp cloth form time to time.

2. Just to be sure I bought a set from AudioCubes when I was buying something else.

I've also had the L3000 for over two years without using anything special and it is still in excellent condition.

One thing to watch out for is the velcro closure of the small black cord storage bag. I think it's possible the velcro might cause some slight surface damage to the cloth-covered cable over time. I use another cloth bag with a string closure instead.

Also, in humid areas, it might be a good idea to store the L3000 in an air-tight plastic box with a dehumidifier inside.

It probably would be a good idea to treat the leather. Don't ask me with what, though. I wouldn't worry about earpad availability.

Not sure what the previous owner did for maintenance on mine but I haven't had to do anything special. I always keep them in the leather pouch when not in use though.

When I acquired my L3000 second hand, the leather felt a little dry. After reading through numerous websites about Connelly leather treatment, most people settled with Lexol Conditioner and pH-Cleaner. The cleaner and conditioner seem to work quite well as the leather is now nice and supple.

I applied the stuff about 8 months ago and the leather don't seem to need another treatment. Like any leather product, avoid direct sunlight, strong solvents, etc.
