I have had the Zune for a couple of days, and I'm very happy. But I'm a bit disappointed in the equalizer. I knew going in that it was only presets, but the differences between the presets seem very minor. I suppose I can hear the biggest difference when switching from "none" to "acoustic", and "electronic" seems a wee bit brighter, but basically there is no big deal.

Is this the case with all Zunes? Or is there something wrong with mine. I tried it with the stock earbuds, my own higher quality phones and my stereo system.

Thanks.

I notice a considerable difference. Have you listened to the different settings for extended periods? Listen to one for a good while then switch.

I am hoping for a custom EQ in the new firmware, but don't expect one. Hopefully they'll at least have more presets.

No, I haven't really done that. I kept cycling through them pretty quickly. I will try it as you suggested.

It seems to me the differences in the presets of my daughter's ipod are more obvious.

Yeah, custom would be very nice, but there doesn't seem to be any reason to think it's coming.

Just another voice longing for a custom EQ.

It's the only thing that makes me hesitant to recommend this player.

Other than that I've been loving the Zune.

I did some more extended listening and discovered that there is more of difference in the eq presets when listening to newer music with high production values. Unfortunately, most of my listening is Vintage Jazz, and much of the SQ there is not so good. This is where I REALLY need a custom EQ. (And we shouldn't have to go back to the main menu to get to it. It should be one of the options available by pressing the center button while listening.)

I suppose there is room to be hopeful. If it doesn't come in the next firmware upgrade, it is still possible for the future. Right?

That's the spirit!

What is the source of your vintage jazz recordings? Vinyl? Pirated mp3's? CD?

There is help to be found!

Most of my Jazz collection comes from eMusic. Generally 192 bitrate mp3s, I believe. We are talking live recordings from the 30's, 40's, 50's. There is really not much there to work with, sq wise.

The EQ in the Zune itself does make a difference depending on headphones used.
The EQ in the program on my pc distorts when i use it to listen from my pc. Its absolutely unusable. I hope the new firmware fixes it with a real EQ.
