Hello all as you can see I am new the head fi. I first became interested into headphones after my first good pair of sr 80's which I have had for 6 months and have LOVED them for that entire time. My dad also owns a pair of nice headphones which are barely used now as they are over 30 years old I believe. The hd 540 reference series by sennheiser is the name of them and I recently compared them to my 80's (running through computer souncard because I have no amp though they seem to recieve plenty of power). I love the sound these produce as well and was wonder If anyone has experience with these old headphones and how they compare to the current genereation of headphones. I have 300 dollors I am planning on investing in a gilmore lit or creek amp and possilby an upgrade in headphones.

Is the 540 what I can expect from the 580 or 600 in terms of stadium positioning (grados being on stage and senns being laid back)?
