On their website they sell different kinds of SACDs. Right now I'll only be listening to SACDs thru my ns500v in stereo mode because of headphones. Do I have to get the stereo SACD or can I get the multi-channel and use the cdp to switch it to stereo? I like to get multi-channel if I can because i can use them with speakers too.

Also, hybrid means it will work in SACD & CD mode right? Is one better than the other or does it not really matter?

Hmm, why did you buy an SACD player if you weren't sure of this? SACD >> standard CD, other things being equal. Note that the CD mixes on a hybrid disk can be better than other CD mixes of the same recording, but the SACD version will just about always be better.

Hybrid SACD. These will play as SACD on your Sony.
I have my phones connected at one of the stereo line outs.

Right now I am listening to a hybrid multichannel SACD on my headphones. It sounds normal.

Now I am listening to an SACD multichannel that's not hybrid. This sounds good.

I don't know what the machine does, but the stereo out jacks don't seem to be missing any important information. Of course it's not multichannel, but it sounds good on my phones. Better than my normal cd's.

Too bad I only have 2 multichannel SACD's

One thing to add. The volume is much lower on the SACD. I just about blew my brains out when I just switched to a regular cd

What I meant was, if hybrid means SACD/CD and non hybrid means SACD only. Does the quality of hybrid cd have suffer because it is multi-layered.

Did you switch it to stereo SACD when you were listening to a multi-channel cd? Did the volume still appeared to be much lower then a regular cd?

I didn't switch anything. I just put the cd's in and pressed play. Right now I can't remember how to switch it.

Yes, the Hybrid-SACD has a two layers - SACD + CD, whereas the Single Layer SACD consists of only one - SACD - layer.

The Hybrid SACD can be played in a CDP as a CD, the Single layer SACD cannot. Whether the SACD layer (on Hybrid- as well as on Single layer SACD) contains stereo + multichannel informations depends - some do, some don´t. But you will always be informed about that on the backcover ...

I don't think I've ever seen a multi-channel SACD that didn't have a separate 2-channel SACD mix.

I think it may be a requirerment. You can switch between the multi-stereo mixes on the sony using the remote, just press the button below the "clear" button.

Yeah, CaptBubba is right. I have the NS500V and hybrid SACDs and I can always switch between SACD/CD or multichannel/stereo if I so please. Also, a stereo layer is a requirment for all SACDs as I understand it.

Markl may be right, but at least there seem to exist a few SACD without any multichannel information (it says so on the backcover of the J. Coltrane A Love Supreme for example)

Doesn't it sound weird to you when you listen to muti-channel sacd on stereo headphones? On your remote there is a button for multi/2ch to switch between stereo & multi-channel. It is located on the left side of the remote just underneath the number pad.
