Hey,

I have some bootlegged shows of various bands and most of fine but I just got one that has constant hiss throughout and it's pretty loud. Is there a program that can help me tone it down or something? I have foobar200, will that do anything? Does such a program exist? for free? Thank you

Any audio editing package should have noise removal. The problem is you'll lose quality if you do it. Just ignore the hiss.

Your best bet is a dynamic pattern based noise filter. You give it a sample of the hiss from a part with no music and it creates a filter that just notches into that particular range. Then it applies the filter dynamically- less in the loud parts, more in the quiet ones. If you adjust it correctly, it's very effective and it only improves the track, it doesn't harm it.

There are plugins for programs like Peak or ProTools that do this, and standalone hardware like CEDAR and standalone software like SoundSoap Pro. I imagine there are consumer level versions as well.

Audacity has a good noise removal filter in it.
It is a free programme you can get it from Audacity: Free Audio Editor and Recorder

You mark a bit of the hiss without the music and use that as a template to remove the noise.

It does change the music as well, but you can specify amount of noise reduction it does - so it is a case a trial and error until you get a result you are happy with.
