hi there, im considering going with the 250 ohm version now that i realize i prolly wont/cant afford to get a amp/dac that will drive the 600 ohm version to potential. also, most of my music is not in super high quality flac or anything, so i thought maybe the 250 ohm version will be more forgiving?

a few questions tho,

1. what are the main differences between the dt990 250 ohm and the 600 ohm? i tired to google and search for this myself but i couldnt find much.

2. which amps would be suitable to drive the 250ohm version well? musiland 02 monitor? little dot 1+?

thanks to all who give advice! i appreciate it!

Because of its focus on treble and bass, I wouldn't necessarily consider the 990s forgiving.

It really sux that the price on that B&H went from $246-- back to $320 on those 990/600's

truly sux(despite that sales person telling you it would stay that same price) Would have been best deal of 2010 !!!

my suggestion many people have commented on many flaws that the DT990/250 ohm has & how the 600 ohm version fixes stuff like over-brightness, rolled of treble and some over-whelming bass issues.

if you still decide on getting the 990/250, an amp like the Musiland Monitor 02 US will be decent enough.

The Zero DAC/AMP can also be considered since the newer 2009 versions have improved vastly + they have a Volume pot (something the Musiland does not)

you might also consider the DT880/250 if you can't pick up the 600 ohm. very solid cans with phenomenal detail, but might be a tad bit analytical/bass light for some users tho.

edit:

or how about idea 2

instead of buying cans, why not get better gear for your Senn HD595's? something like the Musiland Monitor 02 US + Little Dot MKIII might give you the satisfaction that you need !

If you want bang for the buck (and with v.g. quality) .......dt990/600 ohm (have had mine since they first came out via Beyer Manufaktur) mated with Ming Da MC84C07 (aprox $400) and do NOS tubes (preferably orig [not re-issue] Mullard). Contrary to some posts I've seen - they DO need an amp with at least the ability of a decent tube amp. The Ming Da has proven to be a great amp for the money and stands very well on its' own. They mate beautifully with each other.............otherwise I prefer my Vixen's built with Grado HF-2 drivers - a more costly proposition.

The 600ohm DT990 is a very good product. The bass is NOT overwhelming. I consider its bass to be just right (and at times could be a little stronger). I am extremely sensitive to tipped up highs. With my DV332 the highs are very slightly more than I would like. I am rolling tubes to shift the tone ever so slightly away from the treble and up in the bass. The mids are incredible. Voices are sweet and clear. The best thing this hp does is create a palpable image. I was listening to Aimee Mann yesterday and could 'see' her in front of me. This is what I really want in a hp. The rest is fine tuning tone control.
