I have been contemplating getting a set of dt990, but have been reading allot about the dt770. From what i can tell the 770's have more bass and are closed as opposed to the open 990. I am wondering if they have a similar sound to them and if they even both use the same drivers? I am kind of leaning towards the 770 now because i can get it for $100 us cheaper (always good when your in university) and i listen to allot of bass heavy trance music. Are the 990's overall sound that much better?

I believe the 990's are more neutral, and slightly better in most aspect. 770's put more emphasis on bass, which may or may not be what you're looking for. Seems like if price matters to you, you may want to go with the 770's, as they'll be different as opposed to just being worse.

ok, so 990 has overall better sounds through the spectrum and 770 puts out more bass?

Well, are the overall SQ better in the DT 990? I have both headphones (PRO-versions), and I like both for what they have to offer. The DT 770 have deeper and more punch in the bass, nice upper mids (but a bit lacking low mids), and good treble. If you like ample bass reproduction I can't see how you can be wrong with the DT 770's. The DT 990 has better reproduction in the mids (but some peaky upper mids), and the same direct and pleasant treble as the DT 770. The soundstage and presence is adequate in both sets, IMO.

I like the "lively" reproduction of the DT 990 very much, but if you want the beyerdynamic bass, you can't go wrong with the DT 770.
