i know the features of each headphone. i understand that the px200s are slightly more comfortable and seem to be made of higher quality. however i have two questions:
-how does the sound compare between the two?
-and how much sound does the 497s leaks compared to the px200s. (i will be using them in a semi-quiet office environment listening to music at a reasonable level).

thanks

497's sound quality is a major step up.
Leakage though is dependent on how close others are and just how quiet semi-quiet is.

I have to say that I didn't mind using my 497s as portables before I got my etys, so they would be fine for the office. Even though they are an open design, they don't leak enough sound to disturb others nearby in an office setting unless it is completely silent. I recommend them over the px200s, especially if sound quality is your main concern.

yea. the office is like any other business office. people blabbing on the phone, talking among eachother etc. ok, so the 497s are closed enuff to keep the music in, but can they keep noise from busy streets out?

I can't say that I have ever used the 497s on a busy street, but I have used them on a busy bus, and they worked pretty well. A whole lot better than my Grados at least. I never needed to turn up the 497s that much to block out noise. I imagine a busy street would be similar if not quiter than the buses that I've been on.

I agree with terrymx and Hiker's posts. If they did fit me properly (which they didn't due to my head size), I'd find the PX200 much more (not just slightly more) comfortable than the 497 which is that half-on, half-off supra-aural design which I've grown to dislike. But the PX200 is definitely worse sounding. I'd choose the PX200 as a do-it-all phone, and the HD497 if you're more worried about sound quality.
